The Institute was created in 1991 to promote regional development by establishing a link between University activity and the requirements of the public and private production sectors of La Araucanía Region.

The mission of the Institute is to help to increase the productivity and diversification of the agricultural and industrial sector of southern Chile through applied research, professional outreach and services. The work of the Institute focuses on six main research areas: soil chemistry, wastewater management, agricultural production, agricultural processes, food technology and molecular biology. These have been defined as the pillars of agro-industrial development. As result of its work over time, the Institute offers the community a wide range of R&D, technical assistance, training and laboratory services. Its laboratories are certified to relevant standards.
